Issue
When opening Outlook or OneDrive, users may encounter the following error:
Error Code: 2148073494
Error Tag: 657rx
This typically prevents the user from signing in successfully.
Cause
The issue is usually caused by a corrupted or misconfigured Microsoft AAD Broker Plugin cache on the user profile.
Resolution Steps
1. Access the User Profile Directory
Step 1: Log in to the Admin Session
Connect to the Admin session on the Cloud Computer (VM).
Step 2: Open File Explorer
Navigate to the following path:
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewyNote: Replace %username% with the affected user’s profile name.
2. Rename the Broker Plugin Folder
Step 1: Locate the Folder
Find the folder named:
Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy
Step 2: Rename the Folder
Rename it to:
Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy.old
This will force Windows to recreate a fresh plugin cache.
3. Sign In Again
After renaming the folder:
Fully sign out of the affected Windows user session and sign in again
Have the user open Outlook or OneDrive again
When prompted to sign in, choose:
“No, sign in to this app only”
This ensures the account is connected correctly without re-registering the device.
Expected Result
After completing these steps:
The sign-in error should be resolved
Outlook and OneDrive should open normally
The user should be able to sign in without further errors
