Purpose
This guide explains how to manually stop a program or process when it becomes unresponsive or stuck on a Windows system.
Requirements
Access to the Windows VM or local computer
Basic knowledge of the application or process you want to close
⚠️ Note: Ending critical system processes may cause instability. Only close applications or processes you are certain about.
1. Open Task Manager
Right-click the Taskbar
Select Task Manager
You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open it directly.
2. Locate the Stuck Application or Process
Go to the Processes tab
Look for the app or process showing “Not responding” or using high CPU/RAM
Expand groups if necessary to see sub-processes
3. End the Task
Step 1: Close via Processes Tab
Select the process you want to close
Click End task (bottom-right corner)
The application will close immediately. Unsaved work may be lost.
Step 2: If the Program Doesn’t Close
Go to the Details tab
Find the related process (same application name)
Right-click and select End process → End process to confirm
4. Optional – Restart the Application
After ending the task, reopen the application if you need to continue working
Expected Result
The stuck or unresponsive application is closed
The system is free from processes consuming excessive resources
You can continue working without waiting for the app to respond
Additional Notes
Repeated issues may indicate software bugs or system resource problems
Consider checking for updates or restarting the system if the problem persists
